Todays World Needs Servant Leaders (Must Read for Leaders/Manager and Directors)

Todays World Needs Servant Leaders

Servant Leadership is vital in today’s changing world. The old Command and Control leadership style is being changed to leaders who can influence them. No Body wants leaders who are Command, Control and threatening kind of leaders. People want leaders who are ready to listen to them, empower them and leaders act as more facilitators and direction givers and teams are empowered to make decisions and leaders stand in the background constantly looking how to help them. Leaders set high targets and ask teams to achieve it. Servant Leaders have the mindset to serve the teams to make them successful. Gandhi is a good example of Servant Leadership

Leadership: Emotional Intelligence (the Empathy Factor)

Leadership: Emotional Intelligence (the Empathy Factor)
As all leaders know Emotional Intelligence is very key quality required to succeed with People. Empathy is one key factor of emotional Intelligence. Let us take an example of a Customer who is totally angry and impatient over an issue with a company. A Customer Support person who gives a patient listening to the customer and understands his view point and clearly explains to the Customer he understand his view point and agrees to some of the mistakes or issue that has occurred. Already secures 55% confidence of the customer. Here empathizing helps to build trust and relationship with the customer.

Patient Listening in Leadership

It is important to listen and understands other persons view point. Understand the other person’s perspective well then you it is better to react. Here is an example. One day a man called the doctor and told him, that his wife has a stomach pain and she needs an appendicitis operation. The doctor responded:-

  • I don’t want to listen to you since you just have to give an aspirin tablet to her, not an operation.

  • He responded doctor you are not listening.  Doctor responded I don’t want to listen to you since I operated her appendicitis just one month back and no operation is required.

  • He responded doctor you are not listening. Doctor responded I don’t want to listen to you since once an appendicitis is removed it never comes back.

  • He responded doctor you are not listening. Doctor responded I don’t want to listen to you, since if it comes back ever, it will never come back in one month.

He responded doctor you are not listening. The operation is not for my first wife but for my SECOND wife. Doctor realized his mistake and realized the importance of being a patient listener.

It is important to listen always well before you react and understand the perspective. Listening is key.

Superstition in Leadership

It is important to have good leadership skills but being a good leaders and superstition can be dangerous.  Below is an example of a strong leader who used superstation in his leadership. One day this leader decided to bet his day in the horse race in another city.

  • When he was going to  the other city he took a flight and his seat number was 7.
  • When he landed and took a taxi the taxi number ended with 7.
  • When he took a hotel room the hotel room number was 7.
  • When he went to the Turf club the taxi guy gave him change of 7 bucks.
  • When he checked the day in the calendar in his phone, the day was 7.

He said to himself, there is something about this number 7 and it will be a lucky number 7. Hence he bet on the horse number 7 with a huge amount. The race started and finished. His horse finished 7th and he lost a large amount of money. Hence never use Superstition in Leadership, it is dangerous.
